Question by Young grasshopper: Is insomnia caused by depression, or is depression caused by insomnia?
I have insomnia and I don’t know what’s causing it-I feel depressed, but I think that if I could just sleep I would be okay. But a lot of doctors say depression causes insomnia. Can it be the other way around??? I’m 16 btw if that helps

No, depression causes insomnia. But if you’re not sleeping, yes, you could become depressed.

Be careful about assuming that two things commonly found together must cause one another. Depression and insomnia are both caused by high levels of stress and anxiety and the various ways brain chemicals are triggered or not triggered. Similarly, if you get the flu you might have stomach cramps and a headache. Your headache isn’t causing stomach cramps, and your cramps are not giving you a headache. They are just two symptoms of the real cause — the flu virus.

it can work both ways I think. Altho, depression is more likely to cause insomnia
